What is a dude ranch?
A dude ranch, also called a guest ranch, hosts paying guests for riding and ranch life, usually in weeklong stays with lodging, meals and horses included. Some are working cattle ranches. Others focus on trail riding, family programs or resort comforts.
Can you really work cattle on a ranch vacation?
Yes, on a working ranch. Ranches marked "Hands-on cattle work" have guests helping move, sort and brand cattle. The work follows what the herd needs, so ask which weeks have brandings or drives. Other ranches offer a single drive day or arena penning.

Northern ranches in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado mostly host guests from June through September, with brandings, gathers and drives in spring and fall. Southern Arizona ranches flip that calendar and are open from fall through spring, so there is a ranch season somewhere all year.
