Arizona is winter ranch country. The classic guest ranches around Tucson, Wickenburg and the grasslands near Patagonia and Sasabe ride through the Sonoran Desert from fall to spring, when the northern ranches are closed. A few, like White Stallion and Tanque Verde, stay open all year, and White Stallion moves summer rides to early morning and late afternoon.
Most Arizona stays are about riding, not ranch work: desert trail rides, arena team penning and plenty of time by the pool. For real cattle work, look at Cold Creek Ranch near Clifton, where guests help gather and brand, the roundup weeks at Tombstone Monument and Sprucedale, or Arizona Cowboy College's sessions on working ranches.
