The biggest difference between ranches isn't the cabins. It's what you'll be doing at 7 a.m.
Start with how you want to spend your days
Almost every ranch on Brand Book has horses, big views, and a dinner bell. What separates them is the rhythm of the day.
Working outfits plan days around the cattle. Family ranches plan them around riding groups for every age. Luxury ranches plan them around choice, with riding as one option among fly fishing, shooting, and the spa.
Working ranches: you're part of the crew
- Expect long days in the saddle. Some outfits we list plan on five to eight hours.
- The work follows the cattle: branding and drives in spring, gathers and sorting in fall.
- Minimum ages for cattle work usually fall between 12 and 18, and rider weight limits around 225 to 250 lb are common.
- Some trips are camping trips, where camp moves with the herd.

Family ranches: a horse for every rider
- Kids often ride in their own groups by age, with dedicated wranglers.
- Trail riding usually starts around age 5 or 6, with lead-line or pony rides for younger kids.
- Week-long stays with a Sunday arrival are the norm.
- Many family ranches switch to adults-only weeks in late August and September.

Luxury ranches: pick your own adventure
- Fly fishing, sporting clays, spas, and heated pools share the bill with riding.
- Several are open year-round.
- When cattle work is offered, it's often an add-on day or arena penning, sometimes for an extra fee.
- Read the fine print: resort fees, gratuity, and which guided activities cost extra vary widely.
