Which ranches are actually like Yellowstone
The show made a lot of people want a week in a bunkhouse. Most dude ranches are not that week. Here is how to tell which ones are.
Most dude ranches are not cattle ranches
The show is a drama, but the work in it is real work: branding in a dusty corral, gathering pairs off summer grass, long days horseback with a crew that does this for a living. That is what people picture when they go looking for a ranch vacation afterwards.
The trouble is that "dude ranch" covers an enormous range. A few are cattle outfits that happen to take guests. Most are lodges with a string of horses and a trail ride after breakfast. Both can be a fine week. They are not the same week, and the phrase does not tell you which one you are booking.
The numbers on this site
Brand Book lists 70 ranches. Sorted by how much of the actual work a guest can get into:
- 14 are hands-on. You ride with the crew and do the job, at whatever pace you can keep.
- 24 offer ranch work as an option alongside riding, fishing and everything else.
- 7 show you the work without putting you in it.
- 25 offer no ranch work at all. They are riding and recreation stays.
So roughly one listing in five
If the show is what you are picturing, 14 of 70 is the honest answer. That is not a knock on the other 56. A family ranch with a pool and a kids program is exactly right for a lot of people, and several of the best weeks on this site are not cattle weeks at all. It just is not the thing the show put in your head.

Montana, since that is where the show is set
Montana has 16 ranches on Brand Book, the joint largest of any state. Four of them are hands-on cattle outfits. If you want the setting and the work in the same week, these are the four.

What the week actually involves
Early starts, five to eight hours in the saddle, and work that follows the cattle rather than a schedule. Riding fitness matters more than polish, most outfits have a rider weight limit, and cattle work usually has a minimum age.
