Adults-only ranch weeks, and when to find them
A few ranches never take children. Far more switch to adults in late August. This note sorts them, and shows what adults-only means at each one.
Adults-only means three different things
On a ranch website, adults-only can mean a ranch that never takes children, a family ranch that switches over for a few weeks, or a single program week like a cattle drive. Thirty-four ranches here offer at least one of those, whether you are a couple, a group of friends or travelling alone. Which kind you want decides when you can book.
Adults most of the year, or all of it
Rowse's 1+1 in the Nebraska Sandhills takes guests 18 and older only, and every stay is a working one. Triple Creek in Montana takes guests 16 and up all year, and younger children only when a family rents the whole ranch.
Kara Creek in Wyoming is adults-only in May, June, September and October, which are also the months its cattle program runs. In July and August children can come with an adult. Brush Creek in Wyoming is a family resort, but its Magee Homestead lodge is adults-only unless a group books all of it.

Late August: the family ranches switch over
Twenty-nine family ranches here run adults-only weeks, and most of them start in late August, once school is back. In 2026 Rainbow Trout switched on August 16, Majestic ran one adults-only week from August 22 to 28, and Nine Quarter Circle, Elkhorn Ranch, CM Ranch, Lazy L&B and Latigo all switched on August 23. Latigo then stays adults-only until September 19 and takes no one under 18.
In Wyoming, Paradise goes adults-only from August 15 to September 19 in 2027, and Crossed Sabres keeps its weeks of August 22 and August 29. 7D switched on August 23 in 2026, and Goosewing ran an adult season from August 23 to September 23.
In Montana, Covered Wagon turns adults-only from August 22 to October 1, 2027, and Triple J runs adult-only weeks June 6 to 11 and August 22 to September 24. 4UR in Colorado keeps adults-only weeks in late August and September.
September is the other big month. Flathead Lake Lodge runs four-night adults-only retreats, September 5 to 9 and 9 to 13 in 2027. Colorado Trails keeps one week, September 6 to 12 in 2026. Sweet Grass runs adults-only weeks in September, and Western Pleasure makes all of its September weeks adults-only. In 2027, Drowsy Water's weeks starting August 29 and September 5 are adults-only, and Bar Lazy J is adults-only for all of September.

Spring and winter options
Late summer is not the only window. Bar Lazy J's first 2027 adults-only week starts May 30. Black Mountain and Red Horse Mountain put adult weeks on both sides of their family summer; Red Horse's 2026 family weeks ran June 14 to August 15. C Lazy U usually runs adults-only periods in spring and again from late summer through October.
Vista Verde has a winter window: adults-only in fall, and again from January 5 to February 14. Hunewill in California publishes its adults-only weeks on a calendar each year.

Cattle weeks and women's weeks
Some adults-only weeks exist because of the work. Bar W runs Western Cattle Drive weeks in June for riders 18 and up with experience, and Mountain Sky's Fall Roundup week in late August is adults-only. Vee Bar lists adults-only specialty weeks too.
A few ranches go one step further. Red Horse Mountain runs a women-only week, Sylvan Dale has both adults-only and women-only weeks, and Kay El Bar runs cowgirl programs among its specialty weeks. Shangrila in Virginia runs ladies-only Cowgirl Retreat weeks in spring and fall.

Check the age, not the label
- 13 and up: Cherokee Park takes only guests 13 and older from August 15 to September 18, 2026. Quieter, but teenagers are there.
- 16 and up: Triple Creek, all year.
- 18 and up: Rowse's, Kara Creek in its cattle months, Latigo's late season, and Bar W's drive weeks.
- Adult-oriented is not adults-only. Elkhorn Ranch in Arizona marks each week family-oriented or adult-oriented, and Sprucedale aims its fall weeks at adults. Ask whether children can still book.

What adult weeks cost
An adults-only week is not always the expensive week. Bar Lazy J discounts its adults-only weeks. Elsewhere, check what the adult rate leaves out: Red Horse Mountain adds a resort charge and tax, and Western Pleasure's packages are priced before tax and gratuity.

These dates are for the season each ranch had posted when we read its site, mostly 2026 with some 2027, and adults-only weeks move from year to year. Confirm your week with the ranch before you plan around it.
